Objective: This study seeks to understand how periods of hyperglycaemia can affect nerves and their ability to regrow. It focuses on a framework, surrounding cells within the body, called the extra-cellular matrix (ECM). As well as physically supporting the structure of cells, the ECM helps regulate cell behaviour, and previous research has found that frequent hyperglycaemia modifies the ECM. Therefore this project is investigating whether these changes account for the nerve regeneration problems found in diabetic neuropathy.
