Growing beta cells from skin cells
Scientific title: Generating novel sources of functional human insulin-secreting cells
Principal investigator: Dr Francesca Spagnoli
Institution: King’s College London
Duration of award: 01 August 2018 – 31 July 2019
Dr Spagnoli will be working out the best conditions for growing beta cells from human skin cells, and will test them in mice. If we could find a way to grow insulin-secreting, beta-like cells from people’s own skin cells and put them back in the body, it could lead to a new treatment for type 1 diabetes, and even form part of a cure.
