Dr Spagnoli will be working out the best conditions for growing beta cells from human skin cells, and will test them in mice. If we could find a way to grow insulin-secreting, beta-like cells from people’s own skin cells and put them back in the body, it could lead to a new treatment for type 1 diabetes, and even form part of a cure.
