Exploring the potential of targeting an immune system pathway

Scientific title: Targeting the IL-6/IL-6R signalling pathway in type 1 diabetes
Principal Investigator: Dr Ricardo Ferreira
Institution: University of Oxford
Project duration: 01/06/2015 – 31/05/2018

Photograph of Dr Ricardo FerrreiraObjective: Dr Ferreira will explore the potential of targeting a particular immune system pathway with treatments.

When activated, this immune system pathway – known as the IL-6/IL-6R signalling pathway – can lead to inflammation and activate other pathways of the immune system. This pathway contributes to the development of type 1 diabetes.

Treatments to reduce the activity of this pathway have been shown to be effective in treating other autoimmune conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis. Dr Ferreira will therefore explore if this pathway could be targeted to treat type 1 diabetes.
