Can reducing stress in beta cells prevent type 1 diabetes?

Scientific title: Autoimmune diabetes accelerator prevention trial (adAPT)
Principal Investigator: Dr Rob Andrews, taking over from Professor Terence Wilkin
Institution: University of Exeter
Project duration: 01/08/2014 – 31/07/2018

Objective:  There is some evidence to suggest that stress on the body’s insulin-producing cells can accelerate the development of type 1. This trial will test the ability of metformin, an insulin-sensitising agent, to lower the demand for insulin and, with it, beta cell stress in children at high risk of type 1 diabetes.
