Objective: This team previously identified a group of immune system regulatory cells (Treg cells) that secrete a protein called interleukin-10. They are present at high levels in people whose type 1 diabetes was late-onset, and related activity is found in those who are entering the ‘honeymoon period’ after diagnosis, suggesting that these cells have a role in preventing immune attacks on beta cells.

The researchers are now looking to find an easy way to identify these Tregs and understand how they are made in the body with a view to developing ways of improving the number or functional capacity of these cells in people at high risk of or in the early stages of type 1 diabetes.
