This time 100 years ago Frederick Banting and his lab partners would have been on the verge of the largest breakthrough in type 1 diabetes history – the discovery of insulin. Throughout 2021 JDRF are marking the centenary with an array of special events and activities.

We are delighted to invite you to our virtual Special Event – JDRF’s One Night In – taking place on Thursday 11 February 2021 between 8-9pm.
Join us from the comfort of your own home, where our live Host will take you through what promises to be a truly entertaining and inspiring evening, whilst raising money to support type 1 diabetes research.

A never before seen performance from classical cross-over girl group, Ida
As seen on BBC ONE, Ida formed whilst on the London Production of Gilbert & Sullivan’s Princess Ida. Hailed as a ‘supergroup’ by Musical Theatre Review, the girls went straight into the Classical Charts with their critically acclaimed album ‘Believe’. Described as ‘Breathtaking’ by Official London Theatre, these four stunning sopranos bring you a collection of re-worked operatic arias, chart-topping hits and musical theatre favourites. Between them they have performed alongside Katherine Jenkins, Alfie Boe (Classic FM single), Russell Watson, Rhydian, Kerry Ellis, LSO (The Proms on Thames) G4 (2016,17 and 18 tour) Kiri Te Kanawa and BBC Friday Night is Music Night alongside John Owen Jones.
A 100 years of insulin reading from Jade Byrne (written by Simon Vinnicombe)
Jade is an Actor, Writer, Children’s Book Author and Type 1 Diabetes Advocate who has lived with Type 1 since she was 4 years old. Jade’s had TV roles in BBC 1’s Casualty and Inspector George Gently, CBBC’s The Dumping Ground and Sky Living’s Mount Pleasant as well as touring with renowned theatre companies Northern Stage, Company of Angels and Open Clasp Theatre Company. Jade created her own award winning, critically acclaimed, hit show Pricks in 2018 and has toured with it ever since. Pricks is Jade’s story of Type 1 Diabetes and family. As well as this Jade wrote the children’s book Daisy Donald, about a type 1 superhero in her own right, which raises money for JDRF UK. She also has her Etsy shop Pricks Products selling lots of Type 1 merchandise.
An interactive trick from Magician and Mentalist Katherine Mills
The first woman magician to gain her own prime-time show in the UK with ‘Katherine Mills: Mind Games’, Katherine’s a marvel of modern magic-making. Unanimously accepted into that ever-mysterious, mostly-male institution, The Magic Circle, Katherine is a true modern – a strong woman creating her own style of contemporary magic and mentalism. A regular on television, Katherine also appears by commission at a wide range of social, commercial, fashion and artistic events, always leaving a trail of wonder and happy bewilderment in her wake.
An exclusive DJ set from Marcel Somerville
Marcel is a TV personality, presenter, rapper, music producer and DJ who’s known for being a finalist in season three of ITV’s hit show Love Island. Marcel first found fame in hip hop group Blazin’ Squad and the group had seven top 10 hits. He is also the founder of record label Dmode. He was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when he was rushed to A&E with Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA) after his fiancée Rebecca Viera called an ambulance when he collapsed at their home in June 2020. Marcel: “Like many people I didn’t know about type 1 before being diagnosed with it at the hospital where NHS staff saved my life. I’m grateful for all the vital work JDRF does to support children and adults newly diagnosed to help them and their families adjust to this life-changing condition. He continues: “I’m delighted to support JDRF’s One Night In, it will be a fun night for all while raising much needed funds for world leading medical research to accelerate breakthroughs for advanced treatments and to ultimately create a world without type 1 diabetes by finding the cure.”
