In a report released today, the Society warned that any cost-cutting raid on the research budget, which is widely expected to happen whichever party wins the General Election, would be a false economy that would threaten the UK’s position at the forefront of global science and risk our long-term economic health.

Professor Jeremy Tavare, the Chairman of JDRF’s Scientific Advisory Committee commented:

‘Biomedical science is a core component of the nation’s future, its health and its wealth. There can be no doubt that the recently announced cuts will have a devastating and long-lasting effect on biomedical research, improvements in health and economic output. Biomedical science is a sensitive patient – treat it harshly now, and it will take decades to restore it to full health.’
